Overview

Kinsome is an app designed to connect children aged 6–11 with their grandparents through fun, interactive experiences. To bring their vision to life, Kinsome approached me to add interactivity to their app’s animations using Rive. Their team had already created a series of video mockups illustrating the desired animations, and my role was to translate these concepts into fully interactive, production-ready animations within Rive.

Objective

The primary objectives of the project were to:

  • Enhance the onboarding experience with interactive animations that support smooth, seamless transitions between stages.

  • Create an engaging flow that allows users to move both forward and backward without visual or functional disruptions.

Design

Kinsome’s mission is to make family connections fun and accessible for both children and grandparents. A key part of this experience is Kinzey, the app’s central character, who appears throughout the onboarding and interacts with users at different stages.

One essential onboarding step involved requesting microphone access. Kinzey played a crucial role in communicating the state of this interaction through distinct animations:

  • Idle state: Kinzey performs a looping animation while checking if the microphone works.

  • Access allowed: When permission is granted, Kinzey puts the microphone away and prepares for the next onboarding step.

  • Access denied: If permission is denied, Kinzey reacts sadly, reinforcing the importance of the microphone for interaction within the app.

In addition, loading states were incorporated into the onboarding flow. Instead of static indicators, Kinzey was integrated into these moments to maintain engagement and ensure the experience felt cohesive—even during processing pauses.
